University of Pittsburgh
Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures

One of approximately twenty doctoral programs in Slavic Studies in the U.S., the Slavic Department at the University of Pittsburgh has six full-time tenured faculty members. In both the undergraduate and graduate areas, the Slavic Department teaches courses in Polish, Serbian, Slovak, and Ukrainian, but remains primarily Russian-oriented, this fact reflecting, on the undergraduate level, the interests of most potential majors and, on the graduate level, the current needs of the field. At present the undergraduate major is offered only in Russian, with the possibility of a self-designed major in Polish and Slovak. The Russian major stresses language proficiency, the study of major periods and authors, and the culture of the former Soviet Union. The M.A. program in literature and culture, together with a Russian and East European studies certificate, is suitable for students planning careers in government, business, or teaching. The Ph.D. in literature and culture is offered only in Russian.

Polish Studies at the University of Pittburgh

The University of Pittsburgh boasts one of the premier undergraduate programs in Polish language, literature, and culture. It is the only institution of higher learning in the immediate four-state area (Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, West Virginia) to offer a Polish major.

Polish language is offered on three levels: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. Regular offerings include courses in Polish literature and film. The University's Hillman Library contains one of the nation's largest collection of Polish literature, and the most extensive collection of Polish films on VHS or DVD.

The University's Polish program is a national leader in the development of Polish teaching materials and in the application of technology to the teaching of foreign language. It maintains the world's most complete interactive webpage facilitating the learning of the Polish language, including lessons, grammars, a dictionary, recordings, computer drills, and a wide variety of other supplementary material.

The undergraduate Polish Student Alliance holds weekly or bi-weekly meetings, and is assisting with this year's festival.

BISON GRASS VODKA
“ZUBROWKA”
“The One With The Grass”

“Zubrowka” is a specific category of Polish vodka that is made with the extract of bison grass.

Bison Grass Vodka is the only "zubrowka” now available in the U.S.

Bison Grass Vodka features a singular blade of authentic bison grass, grown in the northeastern region of Poland in Bialowieza, known for its pristine forests and bison herds.

Bison Grass Vodka is a premium potato vodka; its bottle has a distinctive grass-green tint that hints at the refreshing and flavorful experience within.

Hundreds of years ago, Polish nobility first began infusing their vodka with bison grass in the belief that it provided virility, stamina and power. Over the years, bison grass has been rumored to be an aphrodisiac and a strong influencer of the affairs of the heart.

The myth and mystery surrounding the power of bison grass did have some basis in fact, as the FDA disallowed bison grass as an added ingredient in the late 1970's.

Bison Grass Vodka has successfully created the essence of bison grass without including any of the properties that the FDA had found objectionable.

In Poland, bison grass is a diet staple of the legendary bison herds. In fact, when bison were moved to Germany, Great Britain and other countries, they eventually died off because they failed to reproduce. Speculation has it that they were deprived of their preferred source of sustenance (and sexual stimulant).

One of the most popular drinks made with Bison Grass Vodka is a “Tatanka,” from the Cherokee word for bison (taken from the film "Dances With Wolves"). The refreshing drink is made with Bison Grass Vodka, apple juice and a wedge of lemon.

Bison Grass Vodka will sell for approximately $25 per bottle, placing it among other distinguished, premium-priced vodkas.

“ULTIMAT”

What Makes A Vodka “Ultra-Premium”?

It's a question many may ask when they see Ultimat on the top shelf. But the answer is immediately evident once this ultra-premium vodka passes through their lips and soaks the palate.

What makes Ultimat the best? It's a question we love answering.

BLEND. No other vodka on the market is crafted from three distinct blends of Potato, Wheat and Rye vodkas. Potato provides the richness and body; wheat imparts the light, subtle smoothness; and rye adds flavor and complexity. The exact percentages of these blends are a closely guarded secret of ours.

MASTER DISTILLER. Ultimat is the only vodka to entrust its world-class product with a master distiller in Poland. Our master distiller personally guarantees the precise blend of ingredients that comprise this exquisite product. He is also charged with ensuring its excellent taste, texture and clarity - qualities that are meticulously retained throughout the distillation process.

THE PACKAGING. We dare you to find a more sophisticated and elegant vessel than the one that contains this ultimate product. Hand-crafted from Polish artistic crystal, this decanter is almost as attractive as the vodka within. Visually, it is a stunning element.

CANDLE FILTRATION. Ultimat's unique distillation process includes sophisticated ceramic filters and a candle filtration step that eliminates impurities measured in microns. The end result is the creation of a crystal clear liquid.

HYDRO-SELECTION. Our Hydro-Selection distillation is so precise that it removes10 times more impurities and by-alcohols than other methods of distillation. With all the impurities removed, more of the vodka's delicate undertones are allowed to emerge.

FLAVOR. People often select a vodka based on taste, and no other brand delivers more sophisticated combination of flavors. Whether it's our Black Cherry or our new Chocolate Vanilla, these vodkas deliver an exotic, extraordinary taste that no other spirit can, or does, match.

It's clear to see that the steps taken by Ultimat in its dedication to taste and perfection is what sets this ultra-premium vodka apart. When you are looking for a truly unique product for your key accounts, Ultimat Vodka is the right answer.

With a single pierogy recipe and a passion for Polish food, George and Clara Davis began a small catering business out of their home. The work was hard, but making authentic Polish food is never easy. The late nights and attention to quality paid off. Once people tasted the great food George and Clara were making, they were hooked! In just two years, the demand for their flavorful ethnic cuisine out grew their tiny kitchen and in 1985 Clara's Pittsburgh Pierogies and Catering was born.
